Can I just do the group and not the individual sessions?

No. This is strongly advised against. DBT is the Skills group and the individual sessions. To only do the group is not doing the DBT program. The positive gains are maximised from the individual and group interventions.

I don't like groups can I just to DBT individually?

No. I have tried this with people. You can't replace a two hour group focussed on teaching skills with one hour of individual work and expect to learn the skills and how they apply to your life. Part of the benefit of the group is that people learn from each other. So many great ideas come from members in the group that you don't want to miss out!

Can my Private Health Fund help pay for DBT?

There are many different Health Funds. I am in the process of getting registered with them. Please check with your health fund.

My teenager needs DBT can adolescents attend DBT?

Young people under 18 can legally be deemed competent to make their own health care decisions.  However I have only ever run groups for young people under 18 when they are accompanied by a primary caregiver. These groups offer the benefit of both the parent and young person both learning the skills and has often led to closer relationships between them. This will only be offered if demand is clear. Costing will vary for these groups.

What if I start DBT and don't like it?

Unfortunately therapy often isn't fun. Therapy interfering behaviours and wanting to stop therapy is one of the targets of DBT. Therapy can often feel unfamiliar and uncomfortable.

If this occurs we will talk this through and try and come up with a middle path.

Can I spread out DBT over 2 Calendar years to maximise the Medicare Rebate.

Within reason, and if your GP is willing to give you a new Mental Health Treatment Plan. This can be negotiated on an individual basis.
