Welcome to the digital home of UMeUs, a Mental Health Social Work practice designed to help people improve the quality of their life.

Welcome to UMeUs

Natalie O’Brien is the founder of UMeUs and is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with over 25 years of experience working across mental health services and over 30 years experience working with adolescents and families.

Natalie works with people of all ages and has a particular passion for supporting parents to become the best version of themselves — both for their own wellbeing and for the benefit of their children.

UMeUs offers a safe, compassionate, and empathetic space where individuals, parents, and families can feel supported, understood, and empowered to create meaningful change.

The name UMeUs reflects that mental health comes not only from individual striving but also from understanding relationships, family histories and cultural influences.

Therapeutic Approaches

UMeUs provides a range of evidence-informed therapeutic services, including:

  • Attachment-based parent–child work,  including Circle of Security

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Polyvagal-informed therapy and Biofeedback

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

  • Groups for parents and partners

  • Theraplay®

Therapeutic support is tailored to the individual needs, goals, and stage of life of each person or family.

Where do we start?

The first stage of therapy involves developing a shared understanding of the challenges you may currently be experiencing, as well as exploring the goals you have for yourself, your relationships, or your family.

Together, we will consider what you would like  to be different in your life and identify the most supportive therapeutic approach moving forward.

At the conclusion of the initial session, recommendations and proposed therapeutic options will be discussed collaboratively.

Mental Health Social Work

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers (MHSWs) are accredited through the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and are required to meet strict eligibility and professional practice standards before receiving accreditation, and to maintain accreditation.

Further information regarding Mental Health Social Work accreditation can be found via the AASW website:

Therapeutic Services

Understanding a child’s world and behaviour begins with truly listening to them and those around them, and helping everyone feel safe, understood, and connected.

Part of this process may involve considering whether more formal assessment could be helpful, or whether gathering information from teachers and others who know your child well may provide additional insight.

At the same time — and always without blame — I gently explore what life is like for you as a parent, and how small changes in support, understanding, skills, and responses can have a significant impact on both your child’s wellbeing and your relationship together.

Many parents describe this work as challenging at times, but ultimately deeply rewarding — not only in relation to one child, but often across the whole family.

There is no such thing as a perfect parent (my own daughters would happily tell you many of my failings). But through reflection, greater understanding of yourself, and sometimes healing patterns that may have been carried across generations, meaningful change is possible. There is a great deal of hope in this.

For younger children, the use of Theraplay® may be helpful in strengthening connection, emotion regulation, and feelings of safety within relationships.

Parents and Children

             COMING SOON........

Natalie is working towards becoming a registered nutritionist and is keen to be able to talk about mental health and nutrition.

Life brings numerous challenges, and for many people, attachment patterns formed in childhood, along with both small and significant traumatic experiences, can impact emotional, physical, and social wellbeing.

The good news is that we do not need to live forever with these lasting effects. Healing and change are possible.

The first stage of trauma recovery focuses on developing safety, stability, and emotional regulation before any trauma processing or deeper therapeutic work is undertaken. Establishing this foundation is an important part of creating lasting and meaningful change.

Consideration of which therapeutic approaches may be most helpful at any particular point in time forms part of the initial assessment and ongoing therapeutic process.

Our approach is always collaborative and trauma-informed, ensuring you feel safe while building resilience.

Trauma and Recovery
 EMDR

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a gentle, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain naturally heal from upsetting memories or life events that feel "stuck." Sometimes, when we experience something very stressful, our nervous system holds onto those feelings, making us feel anxious or overwhelmed long after the event has passed. EMDR uses simple techniques like guided eye movements or tapping to help the brain reprocess these memories, so they no longer feel as painful or heavy. For children and young people, EMDR can provide a safe way to work through big feelings without always needing to find the perfect words. It can help children feel more grounded and secure in their world. For parents and adults, this approach can be deeply healing for grief, past trauma, or long-standing patterns of distress. Natalie always starts by building a foundation of safety and trust. We work collaboratively at your pace, making sure you or your child feel supported and in control throughout the process. It is a hopeful path toward recovery, helping you find calm, emotional balance, and a renewed sense of wellbeing within your family and your life.

DBT Skills for Families and Adults

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an empowering skills-based approach designed to help when big emotions feel unmanageable or relationships become strained. A very structured program with a strong evidence base, DBT helps you build a toolkit for soothing the nervous system, staying present, and communicating effectively. DBT was initially developed for people whose distress led to suicidal ideation and behaviours, and self harming. However if  now has evidence to support people with many forms of damaging behaviours that come from emotions that are hard to manage including substance use. These practical skills help adults, and parents and teens find a sense of calm, providing a pathway  to navigate distress with confidence and hope. At UMeUs, the DBT program is offered as both individual and group sessions (Both are required). Natalie facilitates specialized groups where parents and adolescents can learn alongside one another, as well as dedicated groups for adults. The focus of DBT is about creating a life that feels more stable, calm and evenly tempered, helping you and your family thrive and reconnect.
